My Personal TeachingPhilosophy

  • Classroom Climate: Instill a work ethic where hard work, reflective journaling, exploration, and technical practice are integral to making meaningful artwork.

  • Empowerment: Empower students to think for themselves creatively through brainstorming, idea generation activities, research, and investigation. Encourage independence in the art room through clear communication of criteria and organization of the curriculum and supplies.

  • Student Ownership: Make the art room a second home to students by creating an inclusive community, accessible supplies, individual storage spaces, group discussion boards and image sharing boards, and by making myself available beyond contracted work hours.

  • Celebrating Diversity: Build a community of supportive artists by creating scenarios where students of different backgrounds will be asked to share ideas, work collaboratively, and respect differences.

  • Meaningful Art Making:  Integrate Enduring Ideas into all units in order to develop personal meaning within student work.

  • Value Discovery: Allow students to explore and share discoveries with each new media and technique without the pressure of a finished product to conquer their fear of failure or mediocrity. Encourage students to see the world of art supplies as endless possibilities.

  • Discussion and Reflection Are Key: Help students reflect on their evolving work through regular self-assessments and mid-progress critiques. Allow students to be heard as they learn to describe their artwork in meaningful artist statements.

  • Community Involvement: Provide growing artists with opportunities to see their work affecting the lives of others. Facilitate opportunities for students to share their artwork and experiences beyond the walls of the classroom through participation in community events, public artworks, online galleries, and public exhibitions.
