ANNOUNCING AFTERNOON AP ART WORKSHOPS!

YOU MUST ATTEND AT LEAST ONE WORKSHOP SERIES (M/F) PER QUARTER DURING FIRST SEMESTER. Attendance and participation is 10% of your overall grade.

Check out the great workshops that I have planned for you and stay after school in Studio 308 for some media exploration and build your Breadth Portfolio while you're at it!

1.Drapery

8/25-9/4 Due 9/8
(Hwk: Pick out 5 personal objects to draw for #3 and photograph)

Set up a dramatically lit still life of fabric with interesting folds and shadows. Draw from observation (not from a photo on your phone). Map out the contours with vine charcoal then add gray scale chalks to shade. Use toned paper. Choose your size.

2. Close Up

9/8-9/15 Due 9/22

(6 classes)

Find an interesting object and zoom in and crop using a viewfinder. Draw as precisely as possible. Use Colored pencil or chalk pastels. You may work from a photo. Practice layering colors to match and blending smooth in order to prep for your upcoming still life project. If you choose to work with prismacolor pencils, use a smaller size 9"x12"

3.Expressive Hands

9/16-9/29 Due 9/29

(10 classes)

Man alone has a hand. He uses it as a tool, as a symbol, and as a weapon. A whole literature of legend, folklore, superstition, and myth has been built up around the human hand. As an organ of performance it serves as eyes for the blind, the mute talk with it, and it has become a symbol of salutation, supplication, and condemnation.

Use the hand/s as a means to convey emotion. Create several hand studies in your investigation sketchbook. Focus on mark making. Experiment with different media and surfaces. You may use limited amounts of color but do not attempt to create flesh tones with colored pencil.

4.A Study of Perception: Reflective Identity Still Life

9/30-11/9 Due 11/10

Create a self-portrait incorporating the idea of "reflective identity" or how others perceive them. Research the theme of identity in artist work and how the artist subtle acknowledgments of identity are represented. The idea of "Reflective" is open to interpretation. Use a grid. 1/2" border. Use prismacolor pencils only. 11" x 14"

5. Mixed Media Skeletal Tiles

11/10-12/2 Due 12/2

Intro to Oil Paints

You will work with four wood square tiles. You will collage on all four tiles. Stain the tiles and assemble them how you prefer. Draw out a composition using one or more bone sections from a human or animal skeleton. You may use photos for reference but we have Juan, the skeleton in the closet. You must seal your collage in matte medium. Then practice using oil paints to shade the skeletal fragment. Sketch the skeletal section out in pencil or charcoal. This could be another Breadth piece.

6. Provocative Portrait

12/3-12/19 Due 1/5

If done early, work on #7 or other Breadth piece.

Use either prismacolor pencils or oil paints in color. Practice a section of the face and layering/mixing colors for accuracy. Be as realistic as possible.

You will work from a carefully composted original color photograph. We will set up time in the photo room to get dramatic lighting or you can try to shoot several possibilities for reference.

CHOICE #1: Create a dramatic social commentary. (example: French fries sticking out of the mouth/Obesity Epidemic)

CHOICE #2: Add a hint of Surrealism with an obscure object/s or facial expression incorporated.

CHOICE #3: Work with a double exposure where there is more than one of the same face visible.

7. Figurative Artwork

WE MAY HAVE TO SKIP THIS BREADTH ASSIGNMENT IN ORDER TO MOVE ON TO OUR CONCENTRATION. YOU MAY WISH TO WORK ON THIS AT HOME IF YOU FEEL INSPIRED.

Create several short studies of the human figure in different poses. Include the figure (more than just head and shoulders). Work in color but does not have to be realistic. Choose your media.

CHOICE #1: Surreal with figure

CHOICE #2: Social commentary with figure

8. Winter Break Homework

12/19-1/3 (16 days)   Due 1/5

(Unless we agree on an alternative deadline)

CHOICE #1: Symbolic Hair

Human or animal. Focus on movement and rhythm while incorporating unexpected imagery or designs within the hair of whatever creature you choose.

CHOICE #2: Over and Under: Opposing Worlds

Create a fantasy world that incorporates an animal or human and focuses on contrast between the two worlds.

CHOICE #3

Draw an animal in a fantasy world or a portrait of a fantasy animal.

9. Nonobjective Paintings

1/4-1/12 (7 classes)

Also photograph your Breadth section for your final exam.

Experiment with 2 or more paintings on scraps of wood. Experiment with muted colors and the second with bright, bold colors. Use a wide variety of media and techniques. Layer. Layer some more. Try hammering the wood. Scratch into it. Glue things onto it. Drip. Pour. Now refine your compositions to focus on

the principles of design.
